Getting Started Writing … Where?

by Nikki Katz on January 14, 2010

getting started writingI’m getting ready to start writing a new novel (young adult fantasy) and (as always) I’m very excited but having a tough time figuring out where I want to start! And I don’t mean where I want to start Chapter 1. I mean, where do I want to start my writing.

With my first novel, I started about 2/3rd of the way through the book. This way I already knew who my characters were (I didn’t have to develop them yet) and the scenes were very full of energy and action. From there, I wrote to the end of the book and then started with the beginning.

With my second novel I started at the beginning and wrote forward for quite a bit. Then I jumped around from the middle to the end. I wound up outlining the entire novel to make sure I filled in all the gaps!

With this third novel I’m still not yet sure where I want to start. The plotline stems from a short story I wrote, so I will probably start there, editing and adding as I move along.

So tell me, where do you start writing if you are working on a short story, novella, or novel?
